Safari Sweet Spot: Great Game Viewing and Vic Falls in Full Flood
Many of our first-time visitors to Victoria Falls ask us when the best time of year to book a trip is. In general, we recommend visiting Victoria Falls between April and September, directly after the region’s rainy season. During these months, there is little rainfall, great weather and even better game viewing. But if you’re hoping for great game viewing and to see the Falls at its best, you’ll need to visit in the ‘sweet spot’ between May and July. Read more about the best time to visit Vic Falls below.
The Victoria Falls is a natural world wonder, roughly twice the height of Niagara Falls. In full flood, approximately 600 million litres of water flow over the edge per minute. The sheer force of the water drives a column of spray high into the air, drenching the evergreen rainforest on the edge of the Falls and inspiring the name ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, or ‘The Smoke That Thunders’. But timing your visit when Vic Falls is at its most impressive can be tricky.
Zimbabwe and Zambia’s wet summer runs from November to April. This time of year is the region’s ‘green season’ when the rains bring the landscape to life with shades of lime, emerald and olive. Although the first rains fall in November, it takes a few months for the rain which falls in the Angolan highlands to wind its way along the Zambezi gorges to Vic Falls. After the dry winter it takes a while for the Falls to gather steam and hit their peak in around March and April.
The tricky thing about visiting Victoria Falls is that the most impressive spray (March to May) doesn’t coincide with peak safari season (roughly June to October) in the region. There is a small window of time however, between May and July when the Falls – although not at full volume – remain incredibly impressive and game viewing is good too.
In this sweet spot between May and July, you can expect great game viewing, warm days, cool nights, little to no rain and plenty of water still thundering over the precipice of Victoria Falls. This time of year also offers great weather for Zambezi River cruises, boat safaris, microlight and helicopter flights, quad biking, canoeing trips and more!
