Qhubeka Education supplies bicycles to school children across Africa. By reducing the time it takes for learners to commute to and from school, Qhubeka Education enables them to spend more time in class and on homework.
The learners are also less tired, meaning they are better able to concentrate on their schoolwork. Transportation is a fundamental element of development. The majority of schoolchildren in Africa have no access to transport. In South Africa alone, 12 million of the country’s 16 million school children walk to school. More than 500 000 of these spend more than two hours commuting each way, meaning that four hours of each school day are spent getting to and from school. Qhubeka Education realises that bicycles are the most effective and economical method of quickly addressing this problem. By providing bicycles to school-going children, Qhubeka Education drastically reduces their commute. This is life-changing for the learners, who are able to spend more time in school and less time getting there. The access to bicycles has numerous spin-off benefits. Many of the children use them to do their chores, such as fetching water or collecting firewood, which gives them more time to do their homework. Children on bicycles are also less prone to crime incidents on their way to or from school.
QHUBEKA EDUCATION PROJECTS INCLUDE:
- Providing bicycles to school children.
- Assistance with bicycle maintenance and training.
- Partnerships with educational organisations and initiatives across Africa.
Qhubeka ECO provides bicycles to people across Africa in return for work done to improve their communities and the environment, including planting trees, recycling waste and farming food.
Partnering with projects and organisations across Africa that promote environmental awareness and conservation, Qhubeka Eco provides bicycles to people that grow trees to earn bikes (known as Tree-preneurs) and people that recycle and trade recyclables for bikes (known as Green-preneurs).
The philosophy at Qhubeka Eco is “hand-ups not hand-outs”. People earn bicycles in return for their work, which enables them to commute to school every day, as well as instilling in them an appreciation of the need to conserve the environment.
Qhubeka Eco projects contribute to conservation in Africa, as well as job creation, education and community development.
